Four people have been rescued in Abu Dhabi after their jet skis ran in shallow waters, the UAE National Guard said on Friday. Teams from the National Search and Rescue Centre, in coordination with the Coast Guard of the National Guard, were able to quickly locate the individuals and transport them to the nearest hospital for necessary medical care. Al-Hilal down Pachuca to reach last 16 at Club World Cup

Al-Hilal beat Mexico's Pachuca 2-0 to reach the knockout stage of the Club World Cup on Thursday, the big-spending Saudi club's first win of the tournament enough to send them through as Group H runners-up behind Real Madrid. Salem Al-Dawsari opened the scoring in the 22nd minute and Marcos Leonardo added the second in stoppage time to earn the four-times Asian champions a last-16 clash with Manchester City in Orlando on Monday. Pachuca, already eliminated after losing their first two games, were lively but an Al-Hilal defence superbly marshalled by Kalidou Koulibaly shackled danger man Salomon Rondon and restricted the Mexicans to long-range shots and half chances. Al-Hilal were guilty of being a bit casual at times, and were given a few scares by Pachuca as they sat deeper to protect their lead in the final quarter, but held on for a victory that gave them five points to Red Bull Salzburg's four. "It was a hard game but I think we did a great game," said midfielder Ruben Neves. "We scored first off, we had control and we defended very well. A clean sheet and a win and we are through. That's the most important thing." The Al-Hilal squad is packed with top-class players expensively assembled from around the world but the opening goal came from a combination of two homegrown talents. Nasser Al-Dawsari took possession in the final third and lofted a pass into the area to his captain Salem, who controlled the ball with one touch of his right foot and lifted it over the goalkeeper with his second. Leonardo headed over the crossbar later in the first half and should have scored in the 83rd minute when sublime Al-Hilal approach play left him with only goalkeeper Sebastian Jurado to beat. His chip was too weak, however, and Jurado got enough of a touch on it to allow defender Eduardo Bauermann to clear it off the line. Pachuca substitute Illian Hernandez sounded a warning with a powerful header that flashed past the post in the 84th minute but Leonardo settled any Al-Hilal nerves five minutes into stoppage time. Neves found him in plenty of space in the box and this time the Brazilian rounded the goalkeeper and tucked the ball into an empty net. Manchester City are likely to provide a much sterner test than Pachuca and Neves said Al-Hilal needed to play in the same way as they did in their 1-1 draw with Real last week. "We are playing against, for me, one of the top three teams in the world. I know them very well," the Portugal international said.

UAE top court reconvicts 24 to life in prison in terror case

The Criminal Chamber of the Federal Supreme Court has overturned a previous ruling and reconvicted 24 individuals with links to the "Justice and Dignity Committee" terror group with life sentences. Following an appeal, the court charged the defendants for collaborating with the 'Justice and Dignity' terror group and for financing the Al-Islah terror organisation. The court also ordered the confiscation of all funds and items linked to these crimes. The previous verdict by State Security Chamber at the Abu Dhabi Federal Court of Appeal had dropped the criminal charges against the 24 defendants. In his appeal, Attorney General Chancellor Dr. Hamad Saif Al Shamsi explained that the lower court had overlooked the defendants involvement in financing and collaborating with the "Jusitice and Dignity" terror group. On July 10, the Abu Dhabi Federal Appeals Court convicted 53 defendants linked to the 'Justice and Dignity Committee' terrorist organisation. Forty-three of them were sentenced to life in prison and five were handed 15-year jail terms, while five others were sentenced to 10 years in prison and fined AED 10 million. The court also imposed a fine of AED 20 million each on six companies that were convicted of money laundering to support a terrorist organisation. These firms have been ordered to close and all their assets will be confiscated. One defendant was acquitted.

South Korea detains 6 Americans trying to send cash, rice to North Korea

South Korean police have detained six US citizens who were attempting to deliver around 1,300 plastic bottles filled with rice and dollar notes to North Korea, a police official said on Friday. The group had been trying to float the bottles by sea at a border island west of the capital Seoul near the isolated North before being spotted by a military patrol, the official at the Incheon Ganghwa Police Station told Reuters. The six are suspected of violating the country's disasters and safety act through their actions in an area recently designated as a "risk zone" which prohibits activities deemed harmful to residents, the official said. "We're investigating them through an interpreter and will decide after 48 hours whether to release them or not," the official said. Since taking office earlier in June, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung pledged to improve relations with neighbouring North Korea after a spike in tensions between the neighbours. Lee has suspended anti-North Korea loudspeaker broadcasts on the border and asked activists in the South launching helium balloons carrying leaflets criticising the authoritarian state's leaders to stop in a bid to prevent inflaming ties. Chung Dong-young, who has been nominated as South Korea's unification minister, said on Wednesday that the leaflet-laden balloons acted as "a catalyst for confrontation and hostilities" between the two Koreas, expressing hopes to rebuild communications with the North. The activists, often defectors who have fled North Korea, also sometimes try to send USB sticks loaded with South Korean TV dramas in plastic bottles by sea. North Korea has described the activists as "human scum" and retaliated last year by launching trash-filled balloons into the South and blaring anti-Seoul broadcasts along the border. Complaints by residents that the actions of activists put them at risk have led some border areas in South Korea including Ganghwa island to be designated "risk zones" since late last year, enabling authorities to step up monitoring of balloon launches and other anti-North Korea campaigns.

UAE strongly condemns attack on UN Mission in Central African Republic

The UAE has strongly condemned the attack that targetted a UN peacekeeping patrol near the town of Birao in the Central African Republic (CAR), that left one dead and another injured. The victims were members of the Zambian contingent serving with the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA). In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) underscored the UAE's rejection of all forms of violence, extremism and terrorism aimed at undermining security and stability. The Ministry reaffirmed that targeting UN and humanitarian missions constitutes a blatant violation of the principles of international law, stressing the UAE's full support for the vital role of MINUSCA in promoting security and stability in the Central African Republic. The Ministry expressed its sincere condolences to the family of the victim, and to the government of Zambia, and wished the injured a speedy recovery. The Ministry further expressed its solidarity with the United Nations, and the countries contributing to international efforts aimed at achieving peace and stability in the region and worldwide.
